As the children on the LOCHI study move into their 9 year old interval, we can no longer use the Preschool Language Scales-4 (PLS-4) to measure their language skills.  As a result, we begin using the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, which can be used from ages 5;0 – 21;11. 

Using the CELF-4 we are able to measure expressive language, receptive language, and language memory through the completion of the following four subtests.
Concepts and Following Directions:
This subtest measures the child’s ability to follow instructions that become increasingly complex as the test progresses.  Understanding and application of concepts such as before/after, first/last, left/right, big/little, black/white, etc, in the form of small one stage instructions up to 4 stage instructions are assessed. The instructions cannon be repeated which means we are measuring the ability to follow an instruction that is only said once.
Recalling Sentences:
Using this subtest we measure the child’s ability to directly repeat information provided. This is to determine if they able to recall all of the information and maintain the grammatical structures as they were presented.  Sentences and vocabulary become increasingly complex throughout the subtest.
Formulated sentences:
Children are given a word to use and a picture to look at.  They are then required to use that word in a grammatically correct, meaningful sentence that is related to the picture. As with the previous subtests, the words provided becoming increasingly complex and move from nouns (e.g. shoe, cat) in to words that may require an indirect clause to make sense.
Word Classes:
Children are required to listen to 4 words and determine which 2 of those are related and how.  For example, if provided with “cat……..shoe…..car….tail”, the two that are related are cat and tail because “a cat has a tail”.  These words can be repeated to reduce the memory load on the child, and aims to determine if the child understands relationships between words.
